In Remembrance – Jeffrey Hallam Bauer

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jeffrey Bauer – wonderful musician and friend, whose understanding of the music of Rabindranath Tagore was so deep and profound. We have reproduced the image and message from the Gandhi Memorial Center here:

A Special Message from the Gandhi Center (Washington D.C)

To our Gandhi Center friends and community:

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you the news of the passing of Jeffrey Hallam Bauer. You may not have been aware that he faced a very difficult challenge with cancer over the last five months.

Most of you know Jeff through his musical contributions over the four and a half decades since the dedication of the Gandhi Memorial Center in 1976. You know of his love for the music and ideals of Rabindranath Tagore and have heard his piano arrangements and compositions. Over the years you have also heard him with countless of our musician friends in programs of Rabindrasangeet and with the very special dance-drama production of “Moha-Mudgar” presented in the Golden Lotus Temple and at the Kennedy Center in 1995. In fact, this spring you even saw the launch of his album of songs of Rabindranath Tagore and last year the beautiful music video with his contribution to “Vaishnavajanato” with fellow musicians for the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Arrangements will be made for the memorial service and we will share this with you in the coming days. His wife, Katy and daughter, Ellie have shared the following message with family and friends:

“Our beloved Jeff passed away peacefully the morning of August 21 while in hospice care. We were able to say our goodbyes and Jeff reminded us that he will always be with us no matter what. He seemed ready for his transition from earth and told us he was not afraid of death. He believed in the immortality of soul and was ready to journey on.”

AUM-Shanti, Srimati Karuna Director, Gandhi Memorial Center

“Jeffrey Bauer whose life is so worthy of celebrating and remembrance made a beautiful musical arrangement of my song “Peace is My Dream” and here is a live recording of it made a few months ago in Washington DC. Sarah Sparling is the young singer and she is accompanied by Jeff on the piano. The music for my song was composed by Bob and Martha Hanrott. I penned the words.” – Ambassador Nirupama Rao
